Hi.  I'm Devon.  Thanks for visiting!  I thrive at the intersection of engineering, biology, and design while leading the development of innovative, commercially successful medical devices, IVDs, and companion diagnostics.  I strive to use my abilities and 25+ years of professional experience to do the most good for the most people.  I am drawn toward opportunities that stretch and encourage growth.  When not developing products, teams, and individuals - you might find me behind a camera, climbing a bouldering wall, kayaking at dawn, running / biking on trails, or laughing with friends and family around a bonfire.  If you’re interested in learning more - keep reading or get in touch.

EXPERIENCE

Strong track record of commercially successful medical diagnostic device and life science tool development

VENTANA MEDICAL SYSTEMS  +  ROCHE TISSUE DIAGNOSTICS

1999 - 2010

Over nearly 11 years at Ventana Medical Systems, I was fortunate to launch many innovative, successful medical diagnostic products, build a patent portfolio, contribute to the 2008 acquisition by Roche for $3.4B, and (most importantly) develop a deep appreciation for all the different functions needed to design, develop test, manufacture, service, and market medical devices.  My responsibilities grew quickly, starting as an individual contributor and ultimately running all of product development for a new, flagship product by the time I left.

NOVARTIS COMPANION DIAGNOSTICS

2010 - 2014

I joined Novartis to embrace an opportunity to create a new, fast moving, entrepreneurial business unit within the company.  Working with rockstar talent around me, we developed companion diagnostic systems comprised of custom assays developed on existing or near-market devices. My responsibilities included evaluating those devices, developing custom software, and leading M&A engineering + quality diligence efforts ultimately producing two successful acquisitions: Genoptix in 2011 for $470M and Vivacta in 2012 for $90M.

QUANTERIX

2014 - 2018

While at Quanterix, I was responsible for driving the internal / external development and manufacturing of integrated hardware, optics, software, and image analysis algorithms of an ultra-sensitive immunoassay-driven biomarker detection platform.  During my time there, I successfully lead the stabilization of one platform (HD-1, HD-X) with a partner in Europe while developing another (SR-X) with a completely different partner.  This success supported a wildly successful 2017 IPO, raising $73.3M. QTRX market cap has since grown to $1.9B (as of Nov 2, 2021)

BS MECH. ENGR., UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA

Mechanical engineering at the UofA covers the fields of solid/fluid mechanics and thermodynamics with a heavy focus on engineering design. My undergraduate curriculum included studies in machine dynamics, fluid flow, mechanical properties of materials, and optics.

I worked several jobs at once throughout my undergraduate program, including many years at the University of Arizona's world famous  Richard F. Caris Mirror Laboratory.

MS MECH. ENGR., UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA

With an emphasis in solid mechanics and advanced computational dynamics, my graduate studies and research honed my skills as a designer and engineer creating complex, multi-body, systems.

I paid for my education working two jobs (as an engineer at ADE Phase Shift, an optics company while also designing exercise equipment as a contract engineer with Tuff Tread) before eventually joining Ventana Medical Systems.

MIT ADVANCED CERTIFICATE FOR EXECUTIVES (ACE)

The MIT Sloan Advanced Certificate for Executives in Management, Innovation, and Technology (ACE) is a special Executive Certificate earned after attending over 25 program days and completing at least two programs from each Executive Certificate track within a four-year period. I additionally earned program certificates in the Management and Leadership track and the Technology, Operations, and Value Chain Management track.

Express yourself and have faith in yourself.  Do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it.  Start from the root of your being and ask, how can I be me?
